This investigation is a great look at how "decay" can be used a manipulating element. This sort of process could be easily applied to a building as a methodology for creating form. The one thing that would improve it would be to have more concrete rules for the way each manipulated piece is added to the overall array.
The compelling part about the project is the action of deteriorated (chemical reaction with) the foam squares. The unique variability of the process comes from the chemical reaction to create design and design aesthetics. This designer created a design process and rule set for the stacking of these foam pieces and created additional variability in the chemical reaction with the acetone spray. This project recognizes the deterioration process, or chemical changes in materials (copper) that can have effects on architectural projects. I can relate this project to the Greek and Roman ancient ruins that hint at the past and this project creates something new to look like an ancient ruin.
Design Computing and Digital Fabrication Wentworth Institute of Technology Department of Architecture Spring 2010
This course will focus on designing and constructing algorithms, in both analogue and digital forms, to explore potential design solutions. Students will learn to use scripting as a tool: for solving specific problems, and for generating un/predictable results. Laser cutting and 3d printing will be the primary prototyping tools used for translating digital design information into physical models. Theoretical and pragmatic approaches will be interwoven throughout the course. Rhino will serve as the primary platform for free-form modeling, parametric modeling, scripting, and preparing fabrication geometry.
