Yoshida_ET Algorithm 02

Design Machine Instruction

DO NOT MOVE THE CAMERA OR THE PAPER.

1. Curve out one chunk of clay from the red box.

2. Reform the chunk however you want.

3. Put it inside the blue box. If there is clay in the blue box already, add it to the chunk.

4. Take a picture of the machine without moving the camera. (Should be set to take both blue and red boxes.)

I believe the overall project was successful. It was surprising to see the intricate output of the work. For the first Algorithm project, my instructions were too long. Therefore I decided to make it simple this time. Participants seemed to use the entire minutes to reformed the clay. I made an interesting video from the pictures. I enjoyed this project a lot.

  1. What I really liked about this piece was how the initial material given also became art as well as what was created as material was taken away from it. It would have been interesting to see a slide show/movie of the pictures taken during the process.

  2. This project was unique because it was the only where the artist actually changed the design machine in the process. Doing this created two pieces of artwork, one of subtraction and one of addition both are compelling to look at because you know the second is a result of the first.
